His score helped give the film its distinctive sense of gothic menace, drama and unease, establishing a sound that would become synonymous with Hammer Horror.
The original session tapes containing Bernard’s music have long since been lost, re-used or destroyed. The only surviving audio materials are the music as heard within the completed film, with dialogue and sound effects embedded, alongside an incomplete set of reels containing music and sound effects only.
During Hammer’s painstaking 2026 4K feature restoration, these surviving materials provided a remarkable opportunity to recover Bernard’s music. Around twenty minutes of clean music were extracted and remastered from the various surviving sources, separating the score from the dialogue and effects wherever possible.
Presented here for the first time, this restored material offers a rare opportunity to experience Bernard’s Dracula score as music in its own right — bringing together surviving elements of a recording that was once thought lost.
