The Curse of Frankenstein really is the film that changed everything. It was Hammer's first horror to be shot in colour, and it reinvented the genre in ways that continue to resonate today. One of cinema's most respected directors, Martin Scorsese, once recalled:
"In my early teens I went with groups of friends to see certain films. If we saw the logo of Hammer, we knew it was going to be a very special picture. A surprising experience. And shocking."
The Curse of Frankenstein was the first of those special, surprising and shocking films. It thrilled audiences across the world and spearheaded works that became known as Hammer Horrors, which, according to the Daily Telegraph, "saved the British film industry" at a time of huge industrial uncertainty.
In July, 1957, in Films and Filming, Peter John Dyer called The Curse of Frankenstein:
"Painstakingly detailed, intelligently written, beautifully photographed in Eastman colour and – above all – set in a period where it belongs… one of the most polished horror movies ever made – a brilliant, bleak, and beastly job."
Now in 4K it's more brilliant and beastly than ever before, and we can't wait for you to enjoy this restored Hammer classic with us!
