Van Helsing Returns
Hollywood Reporter reveals that after successfully turning Universal Pictures' classic horror property The Mummy into a major franchise, writer-director Stephen Sommers is now working on the action-adventure project Van Helsing, a character made famous by Peter Cushing when he portrayed the vampire hunter for Hammer Films.
Filming is expected to start in early autumn 2002. The project will be Sommers' first feature for the studio since signing a multiyear deal with Universal in November 2001 to write, produce and direct films. Sommers will also produce Van Helsing with his partner Bob Ducsay.
Set in the late 19th century, Sommers' screenplay finds Bram Stoker's fabled monster hunter Van Helsing summoned to Eastern Europe to vanquish evil.
The project will use Universal's versions of some classic monster characters, including Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, as reimagined by Sommers.
