PFD To Represent Global Publishing Deals For Legendary British Brand Hammer
Wednesday 14 October 2009
opens proceedings at Frankfurt Bookfair with the announcement of a landmark deal to handle worldwide publishing for legendary British brand Hammer Films. A proven ‘household name’ in the UK, Hammer is renowned internationally for horror and thriller feature films. Besides Disney and possibly Pixar, Hammer is arguably the only major film brand that is self-defining by its genre.
Today, Hammer Films is part of London and Los Angeles based Exclusive Media Group (EMG), a vertically-integrated film development, production, distribution and marketing business. Not in production since the 1980s, Hammer is now being aggressively reinvigorated by Exclusive’s experienced management team, through new investment in the development and production of, in particular, film, television and digital-platform content. In these ways Hammer will honour its sleek 1960s British heritage while simultaneously modernizing – so that it is wholly relevant for international, Twenty-First Century entertainment consumers.
Hammer has an initial active slate of more than 15 feature film projects sourced out of both Europe and the United States. The company is currently (as of September 2009) in post-production, pre-production and development on a range of titles, mostly original and contemporary-set horror or thrillers.
Films in post-production include THE RESIDENT
, the Hitchcockian psychological thriller that marks Hammer’s return to theatrical features after 30 years, starring two-time Academy Award winning Best Actress Hilary Swank (MILLION DOLLAR BABY), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (WATCHMEN) and Hammer legend Sir Christopher Lee (THE LORD OF THE RINGS). It is directed by Antti Jokinen, one of the most acclaimed directors on the music video landscape and co-founder of the production company, Solar Films, Finland’s largest TV and film producer.
Hammer is also currently in pre-production on its eagerly awaited horror feature
, the adaptation of the acclaimed Swedish vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN from writer-director Matt Reeves (CLOVERFIELD) and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (THE ROAD), Chloe Moretz ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER) and Academy Award Nominee Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR).
Caroline Michel, CEO PFD, says: “We are overjoyed and proud to represent Hammer at such an exciting time in the company’s history. Hammer is an iconic household name with a loyal fan base and the raft of forthcoming initiatives will create a whole new generation of devotees. We plan to bring new life to the brand with exciting contemporary writers, as Sebastian Faulks and Charlie Higson have done for Bond and we are looking for partnerships with publishers in all territories”
Simon Oakes, Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of Exclusive Media says: “Hammer has a fine literary tradition, most notably its adaptations of seminal gothic titles such as Dracula, Frankenstein and Jekyll And Hyde. As we come to reinvigorate the brand for the Twenty First Century with new Hammer stories, we can think of no better partners in publishing than Caroline Michel and PFD.”
