BBC Sherlock Holmes

BBC Sherlock Holmes

The BBC have released their 1968 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles on PAL format video and Region 2 DVD. The Hound of the Baskervilles stars Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes, a role he had already played for Hammer 10 years previously.

The release is part of the company's special interest range ( see ordering information below), which also includes the 1977 Count Dracula starring Louis Jordan, and John Gorrie's version of The Picture Of Dorian Gray, first screened in 1976, which stars the late Sir John Gielgud and the charismatic Jeremy Brett.

The Hound of the Baskervilles
Graham Evans/ 1968 / 1hr 40 mins
Based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Starring Peter Cushing, Nigel Stock, Gary Raymond and Gabriella Licudi

The most celebrated Sherlock Holmes story of them all encompassing an ancient curse, a desolate moor, a spectral hound, a deranged killer on the loose and the Great Detective facing one of his greatest challenges make this a classic horror / whodunit.

Count Dracula
Philip Saville/ 1977 / 2hrs 40 mins
Based on the novel by Bram Stoker
Cast: Louis Jourdan, Frank Finlay, Jack Shephard, and 1970s femme fatale, Susan Penhaligon.

Marking the 2002 anniversary of the first publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula, the BBC have released their lavish productionof the original novel in which Count Dracula travels from Transylvania to England where he faces his nemesis, Professor Van Helsing. A classic battle between good and evil ensues... but how do you kill an opponent who is already dead?

James Thomas in The Daily Express wrote of the drama in 1977: ‘Spectacular… terrifying… it certainly sent me to bed shivering’, as was Darren Slade, writing in Talking Pictures: ‘Lavish… an unsung classic… an inventive and gripping vampire movie, heavy with symbolism, which makes the genre seem new again… Director Philip Saville’s visuals invest every shot with atmosphere… the production looks sumptuous.’
The Picture Of Dorian Gray
John Gorrie / 1976 / 1hrs 40 mins
Based on the novel by Oscar Wilde
Cast: Sir John Gielgud, Jeremy Brett

Forget anti-aging cream: Wilde’s witty horror suggests a more effective way of remaining young-looking, although the side-effects can be murder...
