Very weak new novelization by Guy Adams dropped the lushly Gothic setting and rewrote the original plot. Jonathan Rigby calls this "exciting" in his foreword. No, it isn´t.
I enjoyed this film a lot - it is my favorite Carmilla adaptation, great fun with lush Gothic atmosphere. Ditto to sequels. They are not Brides of Dracula, but what would be?

Is this set in 17th century or modernized?

Sumptuous and silly (instead of sleazy) and great fun.

Peter Cushing leads great cast and film looks gorgeous and atmospheric. Sets, costumes and especially photography are splendid. Classy Gothic fantasy!

Perhaps best adaptation of Stoker´s novel, although not very faithful.
